BATON ROUGE, La. - The No. 22 LSU Tigers defeated the UAB softball team, 8-3, on a rain-soaked Friday evening at the Purple and Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, La., at Tiger Park.
"Our youth is still showing," said UAB softball head coach Marla Townsend, "but we got back to playing UAB softball tonight. We played like we were capable of. We still have room to grow."
The Blazers took an early lead in the first inning when sophomore Amanda Allen hit a two-run home run. The home run was Allen's second on the season and fourth of her career. But LSU rallied back to take the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the second. UAB made two fielding errors allowing the Tigers to score two unearned runs.
UAB tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the fourth on junior Cameron Skates's single to centerfield which scored freshman Catherine Douglass. LSU responded in the bottom of the inning as Kirsten Shortridge hit a solo home run to centerfield.
The Blazers were unable to score the rest of the game despite having three runners in scoring position. Senior Andrea Rogers extended her three-game hitting streak, going two-for-four at the plate. Douglass also recorded two hits and scored a run.
"We were in the game offensively," said Townsend. "If we play like this the rest of the season, we are going to beat some teams people say we shouldn't."
LSU was led by Shortridge who finished the night with two hits and four RBI. Shortridge also picked up the win after going four innings and striking out four.
UAB (2-6, 0-0 Conference USA) will face LSU (9-4, 0-0 Southeastern) for the fourth time this season Sunday at 11:15 am CT. The winner of the game will head to the Purple and Gold championship game which will be held at 3:45 p.m. CT.
