BATON ROUGE, La. - The UAB softball team fell, 3-0, to Texas State in the opening game of LSU's Purple and Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, La., Friday afternoon.
"We felt like we beat ourselves today," said UAB softball head coach Marla Townsend. "We just weren't there mentally or physically. We did not play to the best of our ability."
The Blazers allowed 11 hits on the afternoon, three of which were doubles. UAB scattered five hits and left seven on base.
"You are going to have games like this," added Townsend. " But we are going to learn from it. Tomorrow's games will be our chance to respond."
The Bobcats first got on the board in the top of the third inning. Kristina Tello scored from third on a Taylor Hall single to right field. Texas State went on add two more runs in the fifth inning.
The Blazers' best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth. Down 3-0, senior Andrea Rogers singled. After a throwing error on a single by third baseman Laura Callaway, Rogers was able to advance to third. The bases were then loaded after freshman catcher Mandy Lowman was walked. But with two outs already, UAB grounded out and was unable to capitalize and put runs on the scoreboard.
Texas State's Katie Garnett (2-4) picked up the win and Elizabeth Dennis was credited with the save. UAB's Lindsey Croft (1-3) was credited with the loss after going 4.1 innings and striking out four.
Leading UAB at the plate was Callaway who had two hits. Rogers, Lowman and freshman Catherine Douglass each recorded one hit.
The Blazers return to action Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. CT as they take on the Panthers of Northern Iowa. Later in the day UAB will face off against LSU at 4:15 p.m. CT.
