Sumiton Standout Signs With UAB Track and Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB track and field head coach Ray Stanfield announced an new addition to his 2010 squad on Wednesday. Callerina Key from Sumiton Christian Academy in Sumiton, Ala., has signed a National Letter of Intent to run for the Blazers in 2010.
"Callerina is an athlete that we are excited to add to our squad," said Stanfield. "Coach Althea Thomas did a super job recruiting her."
At Sumiton Christian Academy, Key was the AAA State Champion in the 200-meter dash in 2007 and the runner-up in 2008. At UAB she will compete as a heptathlete.
"She comes from a Blazer lineage," added Stanfield. "Her parents are UAB alumni and we believe she will contribute immediately in the multi events."
Her father, Gary Key, coaches the Cordova, Ala. native during the school year. During the summer, Key runs with the Speed City Track Club. Former Blazer Barbara Humphrey is the Speed City Track Club's coach. Humphrey, formerly Barbara May, is the UAB record holder in the 400-meter dash.
Key also played on the varsity volleyball and basketball teams at Sumiton Christian Academy.
