BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Monday will offer Blazer fans the first of four chances to see the UAB women's tennis team on campus this season.
UAB will host in-state foe Jacksonville State at Noon on Monday at the 11th Avenue South tennis courts, located between 16th and 17th Street South.
First-year head coach Krissy Hall leads UAB into its first home match of the season as the Blazers seek their first dual match victory of the year.
"We are very excited to be playing matches on the UAB campus this season," Hall said. "It will provide a great atmosphere for both the players and the fans, and it will offer the opportunity for people on campus to come out and watch college tennis."
Students are invited out early for a pre-match tailgate in the picnic area next to the tennis courts. Gang Green will have its grill set up and will be serving free hot dogs, chips and drinks to students beginning at 11:30 a.m. The match will also feature promotions with t-shirt giveaways during the break between doubles and singles competition.
The Blazers and Gamecocks will be meeting for the first time since 2007 after last year's meeting was cancelled because of inclement weather. UAB won the 2007 meeting, 7-0, at Brook Highland Racquet Club, and the Blazers have swept each of the past three matches between the two teams.
UAB (0-1) is looking to rebound from a 4-0 loss in its season-opener last Tuesday against Memphis. After dropping the doubles point against the Tigers, the Blazers were in tight matches at the top three singles positions but lost each one in three sets. Jacksonville State enters Monday's match at 3-0 on the season.
Monday's contest is the first of two at home next week for UAB. The Blazers will host North Florida on Friday in a match that will also be played at the 11th Avenue South facility.
The other two on-campus matches this spring are slated for Feb. 27 against Washington (Md.) College and March 15 against Murray State. The team's three additional home matches will be played at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
