BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tuesday's women's tennis match between UAB and Memphis turned out to be a reversal of fortunes from than the last time the teams saw each other.
Two weeks ago, when UAB matched up with Memphis players in a flighted winter tournament at Samford, the Blazers won two singles matches in 10-point super tiebreakers and also pulled out a pair of doubles matches in tiebreakers.
Tuesday, when the teams met in UAB's first dual match of the spring season, those tight sets broke the other way.
Memphis won the doubles point to start the day, and the Tigers then won three-setters at the top three singles positions on their way to ending a streak of four straight dual match losses to UAB with a 4-0 victory.
"Memphis just seemed to want it more than we did today," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "They set the tone from the first point in doubles, and we were never able to get the momentum. You have to give them credit."
UAB's Evelien Srijker lost her No. 1 singles match 6-4 in the third set, while Paula Alvarez and Giorgia Romeo dropped 6-3 decisions in third sets at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Brittany DeFelice held a 3-1 lead in the first set at No. 4 singles when the team match was decided. Jenny Cape was in the first game of her match at No. 5 singles, and Ceylan Engin had yet to take the court at No. 6 when Memphis sealed the win.
Tuesday's match was played across town at Samford's Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion. Memphis also had an afternoon match scheduled against Samford.
With the loss, UAB falls to 0-1 in dual match play, while Memphis improves to 3-1. The Blazers host a pair of matches next week on campus at the 11th Avenue South tennis courts. UAB plays Monday, Feb. 16 against Jacksonville State and Friday, Feb. 20 versus North Florida.
