BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tyler Hamby, an infielder from Moody High School in Moody, Ala., has committed to UAB and the Blazer baseball program.
Hamby is a career .362 hitter at Moody with 100 hits, including 28 doubles, and 51 RBI in his three years at the school. Hamby, who also owns 26 career stolen bases, has a career on-base percentage of .426 and a career slugging percentage of .554.
As a junior this past spring, he posted a career-best .371 batting average with nine doubles, 18 RBI and 13 runs scored in 22 games.
"We have known Tyler Hamby for years through our camp program and have hoped that this day would occur. Tyler is an outstanding athlete as evidenced by his excelling on the high school basketball team as well as the Moody High School baseball team.
"On the diamond, one of the most appealing things about Tyler is that he literally can play all three infield positions. This makes him extremely valuable to our team. He reminds us a lot of Keith DePew as an athlete and with his versatility."
Hamby has served as his class president for the past three years at Moody, where he is currently ranked first in his senior class on his way to earning an advanced academic diploma. A Wendy's High School Heisman winner, he has been active in his school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes in addition to the math, science and Spanish honor societies.
"Off the field, Tyler is another outstanding student and will almost certainly excel in the classroom," Shoop said. "He is just a great young man who will serve as a positive role model to all of the kids who follow Blazer baseball. Tyler makes us better as both a player and as a person, and we are very pleased to add him to our baseball family."
The son of Bryan and Sally Hamby, Tyler Hamby will conclude his high school career this coming spring at Moody. He will then enroll at UAB for the 2010-11 academic year.
