BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Wes Holley, a right-handed pitcher from Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala., signed a National Letter of Intent with the UAB baseball program during the early signing period.
This past spring, Holley made an immediate impact on the Wallace State pitching staff, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.33 ERA in his freshman season. Holley recorded 49 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings while holding opponents to a .144 batting average. He helped Wallace State to a 38-13 overall record.
"Wes Holley is truly a signature sign for our program," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said. "He is a special talent from our state, and we have wanted him on our team since he was a junior in high school.
"He chose to attend Wallace State and has improved even more under the tutoring of Randy Putman and Chuck Davis. We believe he is ready to be a weekend rotation guy in our league and will allow us to match up well with the great arms we face in Conference USA."
Holley will play his sophomore season at Wallace State this coming spring and then enroll at UAB for the 2010-11 academic year.
Holley went to Wallace State from Lawrence County High School in Moulton, Ala., where he guided his team to the state semifinals as a senior in 2008. A Class 4A all-state selection by the Alabama Sportswriters Association that year, he was also named the 4A Pitcher of the Year. In addition to his success on the mound, Holley was a two-way threat as one of Lawrence County's top hitters.
Also an all-state selection as a junior, Holley earned all-county and all-area recognition every year of his high school career. The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Holley, Wes Holley has also been successful academically.
"Wes is another gifted and committed student and has earned Phi Theta Kappa honors at Wallace State," Shoop said. "He will be a special student-athlete at UAB."
