HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The UAB volleyball team closed its Conference USA road weekend Sunday with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-21) loss to Southern Miss at Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss outside hitter Caitlin Clark finished with a match-high 15 kills, and Golden Eagle setter Kelsea Seymour led all players with 42 assists in a matchup of two teams that entered the contest in a four-way tie for second place in the early going of conference play.
Andrea Lalic posted a team-high 11 kills for UAB, which dropped to 9-10 (3-2 C-USA) with the loss, while Southern Miss improved to 16-3 (4-1 C-USA).
UAB setter Alison Woods finished with 31 assists in the loss, while Heather Thomas and Jordan McDonald tied for team-high honors with 13 digs. Southern Miss libero Maia Ivanova, however, led all players in digs with 20.
Southern Miss out-dug UAB, 53-44, in the match and posted an attack percentage of .279 to the Blazers' .184.
In the opening set, UAB and Southern Miss played to a 21-21 tie before a Sarah Jane Bowden kill for the Golden Eagles followed by back-to-back UAB errors gave Southern Miss a set point. Lalic recorded a kill to stave off the Golden Eagles momentarily, but a block from Bowden and Seymour on the next point finished the set.
Southern Miss led throughout the second set, hitting .433 for the frame. Leading 17-15, the Golden Eagles rattled off eight of the final nine points to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The third frame saw Southern Miss open up a 19-12 lead before UAB rallied to get back into it. Two Michelle Uzoh kills mixed in with a Sam Serley kill and three Southern Miss errors helped UAB cut the lead to 19-18, but that was as close as the Blazers could get. The Golden Eagles closed the set with six of the final nine points to end the match.
UAB now returns home for three contests in a row. The Blazers will host Marshall and East Carolina next weekend in league play before Tennessee State visits Bartow Arena the following Tuesday in non-conference action.
