AUBURN, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team turned things around Sunday on the final day of the Auburn Winter Invitational.
After going without a victory against strong competition through the first two days of the tournament, the Blazers responded by winning every match they played Sunday in the flighted, round-robin event. UAB did not lose a set on the day.
"Everything really came together for us today in both singles and doubles," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "I think I was most impressed with the fact that we played strategically today, and that was really a key to our success."
Evelien Strijker and Giorgia Romeo earned straight-set singles wins over Southern Miss opponents in the Orange flight, while Brittany DeFelice and Jenny Cape did the same in the Blue Flight. Ceylan Engin rounded out the singles action for UAB by cruising to victory in the Tiger flight. Romeo's match was the closest of the day as she won both of her sets in tiebreakers.
The Blazers' doubles teams of Strijker/Cape and DeFelice/Romeo both earned 8-6 wins in matches against opponents from Southern Miss.
UAB returns to the court again next weekend at the Samford Winter Invitational. The tournament will serve as the Blazers' final tune-up before dual-match play begins in February.
