BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team fell to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 76-73, in both squads regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena. Junior guard Britney Jones led UAB with 23 points and became the newest member of the illustrious 1,000-point club.
UAB moves to 14-15 overall and 10-6 in Conference USA. The Blazers clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's C-USA Tournament in Orlando, Fla. after No. 4 Houston lost Saturday as well. Southern Miss improves to 17-12 overall and 8-8 in league play.
UAB jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles outscored the Blazers 26-8 to take their largest lead of the game, 26-14, with 8:11 left in the first half. The Blazers cut Southern Miss' lead to seven at the break, 39-32.
UAB opened the second half with a 9-0 run that put them within two of the Golden Eagles, 41-39, with 16:01 left in the game. Southern Miss extended its lead to 10 two more times before the Blazers cut it to two again, 64-62, with 6:08 left on the clock.
The Blazers were down by one on two occasions with less than one minute remaining in the game. Southern Miss made key free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 76-73 win over UAB.
UAB shot 39.4 percent for the game, including 24.0 percent from three-point range and 78.6 percent from the free throw line.
Jones joined teammates Crystal McFadden and Diamond Rogers as the third active member of the Blazers to score 1,000 career points with her 23 points against the Golden Eagles. Jones also added five rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.
Sophomore center Amanda Scott went 5-of-9 for 14 points in 18 minutes for UAB. Senior guard/forward Diamond Rogers was the third Blazer to score in double figures against Southern Miss with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Southern Miss hit 52.9 percent of its shots overall, including 41.7 percent from beyond the arc and 89.5 percent from the free throw line.
Junior forward Kendra Reed paced Southern Miss with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Sophomore center Pauline Love tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards against UAB.
The Blazers' next outing will be at the 2008 Conference USA Tournament in Orlando, Fla. UAB has secured the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will receive a first-round bye. The Blazers will begin play at the tournament on Friday in the quarterfinals. UAB's opponent will be decided in a first-round game on Thursday.
