Ambrus Qualifies For NCAA Meet at Tiger Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. --- Elizabeth Ambrus provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor National Championship as the Blazers finished their competition at the Tiger Invitational, the final tune up before the league meet.
Ambrus ran a time of 9:33.60 in the 3,000-meter run, more than a second under the provisional mark of 9:34.80. It was Ambrus' third NCAA track and field qualification, and fifth overall during her career at UAB. She joins Genoah Collins as one of the two UAB runners who have provisionally qualified for the national meet, March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Collins, the two-time C-USA Athlete of the Week this season, had another strong meet. She placed first in the one-mile race with a finishing time of 4:59.82 and third in the 800-meter dash with a mark of 2:14.06. She also helped UAB to its fourth first-place finish in the distance medley relay on Friday.
Erika Russ took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, running a time of 8.75. Her time was an improvement of more than a tenth of the second than her preliminary time.
Collins, along with Jacinta Scruggs, Alina Varpiotaite and Tara Colvin, helped the Blazers 4x400-meter relay 'A' team place fourth (3:51.48). Colvin, Scruggs and Varpiotaite participated in the 400-meter dash, with Colvin leading the way for UAB in second place, with a time of 55.64. She was closely followed by Scruggs in fifth place (56.87) andVarpiotaite in seventh (57.03) place.
Freshman Bianca LeBlanc placed fifth (2:18.29) in the 800-meter dash, Whitney Mays ran a time of 5:10.85 for eighth place in the one-mile run and Stephanie Gammon notched a ninth-place finish with a 10:12.97 finish in the 3,000 meter run.
It was the final meet for the Blazers before the Conference USA meet that begins Feb. 29 in Houston.
