Blazers Win Double Overtime Battle At Tulsa, 78-74

TULSA, Okla. - The UAB women's basketball team earned a 78-74 win in double overtime over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Thursday evening at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Senior guard/forward Diamond Rogers led the Blazers with 19 points, including six in the second overtime.
UAB improves to 12-12 overall and 8-3 in Conference USA. Tulsa falls to 9-15 overall and 5-6 in league play.
Trailing by one at the half, 29-28, UAB held a slight lead down the stretch of regulation until a layup by Tulsa's Larrissa Williams with 3:01 on the clock put the Golden Hurricane up by one, 54-53.
ReShawndra Jackson put in a layup with 2:29 left to give Tulsa a three-point advantage, 56-53. With 2:06 remaining in regulation, UAB's Britney Jones nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 56-all. Defense and missed shots by both teams in the final two minutes forced overtime.
In the first overtime period, both teams went shot-for-shot, tying the game at 65-all and sending it into double overtime.
Tulsa took a quick four-point lead in second overtime period before UAB's Crystal McFadden sank a trey with 3:25 left to pull the Blazers within one, 69-68. Williams responded with a two-point bucket for the Golden Hurricane to put them up by three at 3:02, 71-68.
Senior center Christon Ingram and Rogers put together back-to-back baskets to put the Blazers back on top by one, 72-71, with 2:11 remaining in the second overtime. Vaughn hit the front end of a one-and-one opportunity at the free throw line for Tulsa to tie the contest at 72-all at the 1:24 mark.
UAB went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final 40 seconds of the game to earn the four-point win in double overtime, 78-74.
"I am so pleased with the way our team continued to work hard and play hard throughout the game," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "We had players step up and make some critical baskets in the closing minutes of regulation and during the two overtimes.
"This is a really big road win for us over a very good Tulsa team. Hopefully we can continue to play with this kind of intensity down the stretch of the regular season schedule. We still have a lot of big games in front of us."
UAB shot 39.7 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from three-point range and 82.4 percent from the free throw line against the Golden Hurricane.
Rogers nabbed a double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds to accompany her 19 points. Jones scored 13 points and had a team-high three steals. McFadden tallied 11 points and freshman guard Amanda Peterson had 10.
Tulsa went 32-of-83 (38.6 percent) from the field, including knocking down 25.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Hurricane went to the free throw line just seven times, making three for a 42.9 shooting percentage from the charity stripe.
Williams led Tulsa with 22 points on 10-of-19 shooting and 11 boards. Jackson put up 18 points and Vaughn scored 12 for the Golden Hurricane.
UAB will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts SMU. The Blazers and the Mustangs will tip off at 2:00 p.m. CT at Bartow Arena.
