BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team fell to the SMU Mustangs, 84-51, Sunday evening in Bartow Arena. Senior guard/forward Diamond Rogers led the Blazers with 12 points and eight rebounds.
UAB's record moves to 12-13 overall and 8-4 in Conference USA. SMU improves to 19-6 overall and 9-3 in league play.
The Blazers got into a hole early as cold shooting by UAB put SMU up by 26 at the half, 45-19. UAB hit just 16.1 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes, with nine of the Blazers' 19 first-half points coming from the free throw line.
SMU shot 47.4 percent in the opening half, going 18-of-38 from the field and 9-of-15 from the charity stripe.
UAB's shooting improved to 26.1 percent in the second half, but SMU shot 62.5 percent in the second 20 minutes to hold on for an 84-51 win over the Blazers.
"Things just didn't go our way tonight," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "Sometimes there are games where the shots just won't fall, and this was one of those games for us.
"SMU came out and did a good job on both ends of the floor. We had a hard time defending them and they were making a lot of good shots."
Overall, UAB shot 22.1 percent for the game while SMU sank 53.2 percent of its shots. The Blazers were 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Mustangs hit 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) free throws.
Rogers had a team-high eight rebounds and three assists to accompany her 12 points for UAB. Sophomore center Amanda Scott was the only other Blazer to score in double figures with 10 points. Senior guard LaKitha Murray had a team-best three steals for UAB.
SMU had five players score in double digits, led by Katy Cobb with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Sharee Shepherd nabbed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Janielle Dodds also had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 boards.
UAB will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Greenville, N.C. to take on the East Carolina Pirates. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on CSTV.
