BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Jacob German, a catcher from Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Ga., has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UAB and compete for the Blazer baseball program.
"With Allen Aubin graduating after this season, one of our needs was to sign catching in this recruiting class," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said. "We are very pleased to announce that Jacob German has decided to attend UAB and play college baseball in the Green and Gold. Jacob is an outstanding catch-and-throw guy with the ability to shut down an opponent's running game. He is also an excellent receiver to whom pitchers love to throw."
As a junior in 2008, German logged a .363 batting average with two home runs and 27 RBI while helping his Mill Creek team to a region championship and a ranking of No. 5 in Georgia's Class AAAAA. Following the season, he was named to the Gwinnett Daily Post All-County and All-Region teams, while also earning recognition on the Atlanta Journal Constitution All-Region Team.
German was tabbed a Georgia Dugout Club Top 100 performer in 2007 and 2008 and was selected the Gwinnett Dugout Club Player of the Month for April 2008. He played for head coach Doug Jones at Mill Creek, where he was also a member of the school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
"Jacob is another solid student who believes in our commitment to the student-athlete concept," Shoop said. "He is another great young man who will fit in with our players both on and off the field. Everyone we talked to had nothing but good things to say about Jake German and believed he would fit perfectly into our program."
German, the son of Darryl and Beth German, played summer baseball for the West Florida Young Guns and Team Elite. He participated with those teams in World Wood Bat Association tournaments throughout the region.
"Like many of the players we have signed, Jake has toured the country this summer playing against the best competition in the Southeast and beyond," Shoop said. "He is battle-tested and will be ready to compete at this elite level of Division I baseball. A shut-down catcher is hard to find, so we feel we have a special prize in Jacob and are thrilled to add him to our baseball family."
