BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- John Frost, an infielder from Decatur High School in Decatur, Ala., has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UAB and will suit up for the Blazer baseball program starting in 2010.
"John attended our summer camp two years ago, and ever since that time we have hoped he would one day become a Blazer," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said. "We are very pleased with his decision to attend UAB. We always believed it would be a great fit. John is certainly the `match' we were looking for.
"John is a solid student who is committed to succeeding in the classroom. He is a special young man who is very involved in his high school Fellowship of Christian Athletes and will be a great representative of UAB Baseball."
Playing for head coach Steve Netherton at Decatur, Frost was an Under Armour All-American and an East-West All-Star in 2008. A starter throughout his high school career, he hit .457 with eight home runs and 36 RBI in 31 games last season as a junior.
As a sophomore in 2007, Frost compiled a .420 batting average with six home runs and 46 RBI on his way to all-state recognition.
"On the field, John is an advanced player who was highly recruited across the South," Shoop said. "We always believed he was one of the top offensive players in the state of Alabama. At every level and on every team he has played for, he has proved to be an accomplished hitter. As he develops and gets stronger, we believe he will be a middle of the order presence in our lineup."
Frost is a three-time Decatur Daily All-Area selection who participated in the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Weekend in both 2007 and 2008. He was also invited to the 2008 East Coast Professional Baseball Showcase, an elite event featuring top high school prospects from the East region.
Frost, the son of Keith and Jana Frost, played summer baseball for the Bama Bombers in 2006 and for the East Cobb Shamrocks in 2008. Last summer, playing for coach Jamie Crane, he hit .425 for the Shamrocks and was named the team's MVP.
"John has given up his summers to live in Atlanta and travel the country playing in top level tournaments," Shoop said. "Thus, he has played against the best competition across America and should make the jump to Conference USA very quickly. His dedication and work ethic will allow him to earn his teammates' respect quickly, as well."
