BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB track and field team will compete in the day-long Houston Opener this Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. on the University of Houston campus.
The meet will be the second of the indoor season, and the first since the Blazers began competition at the Clemson Opener on Nov. 30. Head coach Ray Stanfield said this meet is used more as a way to measure the athletes improvement.
"It's a good meet and you never know really this early in the season," Stanfield said. "Earlier in the season, people run a lot in different events and see how their training has gone and where their fitness level is.
"The reason we are going back to Houston is, because we have so many Texas girls and it would be nice to go there and showcase them."
The Blazers will compete against 15 other schools, which includes No.11 Texas, No. 35 Baylor, and Conference USA teams No. 50 Tulane and No. 32 Houston.
"We have a chance to be really good," Stanfield said. "We are attacking this season coming out of the gate and hope that when we come back to Houston for the Conference USA Championships in February, we will have a better at competiting for the title."
The meet begins at 9.a.m. CST at the Yeoman Field House. The field events will be held first, followed by the running events which are schedule to begin at 12:30 with the 5,000-meter run. The event will conclude with the 4x400 relay at approximately 6:30.
