UAB Looks to Maintain Momentum at Troy Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team will go on the road Tuesday to play Troy at 7 p.m. inside Trojan Arena. The Blazers are 2-0 on the year having won the Music City/Magic City Invitational last weekend, while Troy is 2-1. UAB is 18-5 all-time against the Trojans.
At the Music City/Magic City Invitational, UAB defeated preseason Atlantic Sun Conference favorite Belmont, 3-0, before ousting host Lipscomb, 3-0.
The Blazers were able to have an undefeated season-opening weekend thanks to a strong offensive showing. Senior outside hitter Fernanda Domingos earned Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors after averaging 4.50 kills per game behind a .447 hitting percentage.
Junior outside hitter Ivana Bozic was equally as impressive, averaging 4.83 kills per game, while hitting .415 and making 18 digs defensively.
Junior setter Nevena Stefanov made history in the team's first match of the season by becoming the third player in UAB history and 19th all-time in Conference USA to surpass 3,000 career assists. Stefanov had the UAB offense going on all cylinders last weekend as the team combined to hit .358 for its two matches.
Senior libero Brianna Galvin paces the Blazers defensively, averaging 4.00 assists per game.
Last season against the Trojans, Bozic led the Blazers with a match-high 17 kills on .333 hitting to go along with eight digs.
Troy began its 2007 campaign with a strong showing at the War Eagle Invitational at Auburn last weekend. The Trojans lost 3-1 to Auburn before rebounding to beat Tennessee State and Nicholls State by scores of 3-2 and 3-0, respectively.
Jean McCarthy highlighted Troy's weekend by averaging 4.08 kills and 1.58 digs per game.
Defensively, four Trojans are averaging better than 2.00 digs per game with Emily Strader leading the way with a 3.25 clip. Aubre Smith has totaled 11 blocks in the team's three matches for an average of 0.92 per game.
Last season against the Blazers, Troy was held to a .047 hitting percentage.
