BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Digger Towe, a catcher from Charlotte, Mich., has signed a national letter of intent (NLI) to play baseball for UAB next season as announced by head coach Brian Shoop Wednesday afternoon. Towe, a 45th round pick by the San Diego Padres in the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft, will join the Blazers following his second season at Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa.
"One of our obvious priorities was to add a quality catcher to our roster for next year," said Shoop. "Danny Sawyer has caught the majority of our games the past two years and we believe Digger will help fill that gap. He is an outstanding defensive catcher who can really throw the baseball. He is also a left-handed power bat, another component we were attempting to address in recruiting. He really has unlimited potential as is reflected by his being drafted by the Padres."
Towe was an all-conference, all-district and all-region selection all four years in high school while playing at Charlotte HS. He was a three-time all-state and all-area pick in addition to being named to the 2005 Michigan Dream Team.
He set a total of 13 batting records in his four years at Charlotte HS and was given the opportunity to participate in the Michigan Senior All-Star Game in 2005.
At Indian Hills Community College, Towe was named to the All-Regional Conference team his freshman season.
"We believe that this will be a great match," said Shoop. "Digger can help UAB climb the Conference USA ladder and playing in this great conference can help Digger further prepare for professional baseball. He is another quality young man who keeps us building the program the right way. We are thrilled to add Digger Towe to our baseball family."
Towe is the sixth player to sign an NLI to play for the Blazers next season. He joins Nick Crawford (2B, Evangelical Christian School), Bradley Hicks (OF, Faith Academy), Beau Pender (RHP, Gulf Coast CC), Austin Taylor (OF, Holmes CC) and Trey Vice (LHP, Westbrook Christian School) as newcomers to the UAB baseball family.
