BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - First baseman Devin Hamilton, from Acworth, Ga., has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play baseball from the Blazers next season as announced by head coach Brian Shoop on Thursday. Hamilton has a .372 batting average with 20 RBI, nine doubles and four home runs in this his senior season at Harrison HS.
"We are very pleased to add Devin Hamilton to our baseball family," said Shoop. "He is a quality young man from a strong family. We didn't plan to add a first baseman this year, but Devin was too good to pass on."
A two-year letterwinner at Harrison HS under head coach Mark Elkins, Hamilton played a significant role in leading his team to the first round of the state playoffs in his junior season.
Hamilton was named to the Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason Southeast Region Top Senior Team for 2007 and previously participated in the Perfect Game WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Fla. as a member of the OTC Bearcats. His Bearcat team went 4-1 at the championship with its only loss being to one of the four finalist teams.
"Devin is outstanding defensively and has a sweet left handed swing," Shoop commented. "Those are two areas we are trying to improve our team - on the defensive side of the ball and to add more left-handed bats to our lineup. We believe Devin has a bright future at UAB and are excited he will be wearing the Green and Gold the next four years."
Hamilton plans to pursue a degree in psychology at UAB and is the seventh player to sign an NLI to play for the Blazers next season. He joins Nick Crawford (2B, Evangelical Christian School), Bradley Hicks (OF, Faith Academy), Beau Pender (RHP, Gulf Coast CC), Austin Taylor (OF, Holmes CC), Digger Towe (C, Indian Hills CC) and Trey Vice (LHP, Westbrook Christian School) as newcomers to the UAB baseball family.
