Memphis Holds on for 8-7 Win Over UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Memphis Tigers didn't score a single run on Sunday, however an eight-run fourth inning they posted on Saturday was enough to hold off the UAB Blazers, 8-7, at Young Memorial Field in a game that began Saturday morning and was suspended in the sixth inning until Sunday. UAB senior third baseman Ryne Lovdahl led the Blazers by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
UAB falls to 16-20 (4-4 C-USA) with the loss, while Memphis continues to gain ground on the league leaders as it is now 21-14 (7-4 C-USA) The final game of the three-game C-USA series will get underway at approximately 2 p.m.
Memphis' Scott McGregor earned the win with his five innings of work on Saturday in which he struck out two and allowed four runs to improve to 3-1 on the year. UAB sophomore right-hander Kyle Roberson was tabbed with the loss after he lasted just 3.0 innings on Saturday, allowing six earned runs.
Tiger closer Matt Yokley earned his sixth save of the season after finishing the last 1.1 innings.
UAB freshman shortstop Jonathan Merritt was 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored and an RBI, while senior outfielder J.R. Bond was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
The Tigers were led by first baseman Adam Amar who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.
UAB scored two in the second with Lovdahl scoring on a 5-4-3 double play hit into by senior catcher Danny Sawyer and then junior second baseman Tyler Rollin singled home freshman shortstop Jonathan Merritt to take a 2-0 lead.
The Blazers then went ahead 3-0 in the third when Patmon crossed home plate on an RBI-single to center field off the bat of Lovdahl.
In the fourth, Memphis exploded for eight runs on seven hits to take an 8-3 lead with the storms closing in. Amar delivered the biggest blow in the inning by launching a three-run home run over the right field wall.
UAB got one back in the fifth when Turner tripled and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by junior first baseman Ryan Keedy to make it 8-4 where things would stand entering Sunday as rains forced play to come to an end in the top of the sixth on Saturday.
The Blazers got three runs on four hits in the eighth, however could only pull within one run as Memphis held on for the 8-7 victory.
