BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team will head to Kennesaw, Ga. to play the Kennesaw State Owls for a midweek doubleheader at Bailey Park. The two teams will meet for the first time in history on Tuesday, with the first game beginning at 4:00 p.m. (ET).
The Blazers (22-16, 5-3 C-USA) are 4-7 on the road, while the Owls (28-12, 2-2 A-Sun) hold an 8-5 record at home.
The Blazers are coming off their first series sweep of the season, defeating conference foe UTEP in three games over the weekend. UAB picked up its 20th win of the season in the first game on Saturday, marking the eighth consecutive year that the program has reached the 20-win plateau. The Blazers rounded out the series with a 3-0 shutout on Sunday, as they moved up to third in the Conference USA standings.
The Owls have won 10 of their last 12 but have split their last two doubleheaders. In their last matchup against fellow Atlantic Sun opponent Gardner-Webb, Kennesaw State took the first game, 1-0, in extra-innings before falling, 5-3, in the second game.
The Blazers played their first A-Sun opponent last week, falling twice to North Florida on Thursday.
UAB has already made one trip to Georgia in the 2007 season, going 1-1 at Georgia State in February. Overall, the Blazers are 11-15 against teams from Georgia and hold a 6-9 record when playing in the Peach State.
Scouting Kennesaw State: The Owls were picked to finish second in the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll and are currently second in the standings. Senior first baseman Keri McKee was named the Preseason Player of the Year and she has lived up to her expectations, leading the team with a .389 batting average. Three other Owls were also tabbed on the preseason conference team, including junior pitcher Brittany Matthews, senior infielder Jennifer Nolan and junior outfielder Kelley Cowart. In the circle, Matthews leads the way with a 13-3 recod and 2.00 ERA. Nolan leads the team with eight homeruns and 37 RBI, while Cowart ranks third on the team with a .362 average.
