UAB Track And Field Dominates At Austin Peay Spring Fling

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The UAB women's track and field team opened its 2007 outdoor schedule by dominating the competition at the Austin Peay Spring Fling on Friday and Saturday at Governors Stadium in Clarksville, Tenn. The Blazers were joined by Belmont, Bethel, Lipscomb, Northwest Missouri and host-school Austin Peay at the meet.
The Blazers tallied 10 first-place finishes during the two-day event, led by senior Erin Harris who took home two first-place titles. On Friday, Harris took first place in the triple jump with a mark of 12.55 meters, which also qualified her for the NCAA regional meet. Harris continued her stellar performance on Saturday, as she finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.86.
UAB took home the top three places in the 100-meter dash, paced by senior Stephanie McCauley in first place with a time of 12.10. Junior Stacey Adewakun clocked a time of 12.15 to take the second spot and freshman Katrina Harrell garnered the best finish of her collegiate career by placing third in 12.61.
The Blazers got four more top three finishes in the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. In the 400 meters, junior Tara Colvin took first with a time of 56.90 and freshman Amber Walker placed third with a time of 59.00. Senior Genoah Collins won the 800 meters in 2:17.65, while freshman Kendel Hood finished with a third-place time of 2:21.92.
UAB continued its success in the mid-distance and distance events, beginning with a one-two finish in the 1500-meter run. Sophomore Alina Varpiotaite took home the first-place finish with a time of 4:44.65 and Hood tallied her second top-three finish of the day by taking second in 4:45.77.
Junior Whitney Mays won the 5000-meter run in 17:22.24 and senior Ryanne Fortney finished first in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:53.99 for two additional first-place finishes.
UAB rounded out the meet be grabbing a pair of victories in the relay events, including first-place finishes in both the 4x100 and 4x400. The relay team of Walker, Collins, Varpiotaite and Colvin clocked a time of 47.61 in the 4x100-meter relay to finish first, and the same squad ran a time of 4:00.82 in the 4x400 to win that event as well.
The Blazers' next meet begins on March 22 at the LSU Relays. The event covers three days and will be held in Baton Rouge, La.
