BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's track and field team will travel to South Bend, Ind. to compete in one of the nation's premiere indoor meets, the 20th annual MEYO Invitational, on Friday and Saturday.
The MEYO Invitational is hosted by Notre Dame and is held at the Loftus Sports Center/MEYO Track. The event will begin with the women's long jump at 5 p.m. EST on Friday and will conclude at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday evening.
"The MEYO invitational is traditionally one of the nation's highlighted meets of the year," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "It has great competition and is a great place to run. We have always performed very well there and expect the same this weekend."
UAB will be one of 25 women's teams competing in the event, being joined by many Big Ten, Big East and Big 12 schools, among others. The Blazers will not be the lone Conference USA squad competing at the MEYO Invite, as Tulane will be participating as well.
The previous meet for the Blazers was last weekend at the Niswonger Invitational, hosted by East Tennessee State University. UAB was successful throughout the weekend at the Niswonger Invite, garnering two first-place finishes and breaking a school record.
Genoah Collins earned a first-place finish in the 800 meters, while the distance medley relay team of Collins, Tara Colvin, Alina Varpiotaite and Whitney Mays took first with a time of 12:00.76.
Also, the Blazers set a new indoor school record in the 4x400 relay as Stacey Adewakun, Varpiotaite, Collins and Colvin clocked a time of 3:44.07 to shatter the previous record of 3:47.06, set in 2005.
"We are hoping to run even faster this weekend in the 4x400 relay," said Stanfield. "Coach Harris is doing a great job with the sprinters and hurdlers, and that has been evident in the results we have seen."
