BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team will complete its 2007 regular season schedule with a pair of road games this weekend. The Blazers will begin with a 3:00 p.m. ET match at East Carolina Friday, followed by Sunday's contest at Marshall at 1:00 p.m. ET.
UAB enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-7-1, including a 4-3-0 mark in Conference USA that ranks the Blazers sixth in the league standings. By going 1-1 last weekend, UAB has clinched a spot in the C-USA Tournament, hosted by UTEP Nov. 7-11 in El Paso, Texas.
Senior Sally Palmer and sophomore Danya Barsalona lead UAB's offensive attack with seven goals each, which puts the pair tied for 10th in the conference.
Led by ninth-year head coach Rob Donnenwirth, East Carolina is currently sitting in eighth place in C-USA with a record of 9-3-4 overall and 3-2-2 in conference games. Blair Heffner is the Pirates' top scorer with five goals this season, followed by Amanda Broz with three.
UAB leads the all-time series with East Carolina, 2-1. That includes a 1-0 overtime win for the Blazers in Birmingham last October.
Chris Kane is in his fifth season at the helm of the Marshall women's soccer program and has led his team to a 4-11-1 overall mark and a 1-5-1 record in the league this season, which places the Thundering Herd in 10th place in the latest conference standings. Molly Snead is Marshall's top offensive threat with four goals on the year. Kassie Hollman has added three scores for the Herd and Mollie Lee has contributed two.
The Blazers have won all three previous meetings with Marshall, including a 3-2 win in Birmingham last season.
Seven of the eight teams that will compete in the conference tournament have already punched their ticket to El Paso, Texas. UCF, Memphis, Colorado College, Rice, UTEP, UAB and Southern Miss are all assured a spot in the tournament. East Carolina will be battling to keep that eighth spot through the weekend and earn its place in the tournament.
