HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The UAB women's tennis team began play at the Southern Miss Invitational on Friday. The Blazers played singles against Southeastern Louisiana and Arkansas State and doubles against Southern Miss. In all, UAB won three singles matches on day one of the invitational.
"We lost a lot of close sets and due to that, we only came up with three singles wins, so in terms of the score it was disappointing, but our level of play was better and it was wonderful having most of the team back healthy and playing again," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga.
Senior Gulsah Esen was the lone victor for the Blazers against Southeastern Louisiana. Esen won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Also against Southeastern Louisiana, freshman Jenny Cape lost 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 and senior Antonia Nugent fell in three sets at No. 3, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Senior Seden Soyalp lost 7-5, 6-4 at flight four, while freshman Evelien Strijker lost 7-5, 7-6 at No. 5.
Against Arkansas State, Esen lost 3-6, 7-6, 10-6 at No. 1 and Cape lost 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2. Nugent pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 triumph at flight five.
"I am especially pleased with how well Antonia is playing," Ertunga said. "It's good to see all of her hard work paying off."
Strijker was also victorious against Arkansas State, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5.
In doubles play versus Southern Miss, Esen and Nugent lost 9-8 at No. 1 and Soyalp and Cape lost 9-8 at flight two.
