Blazer Track Team Impressive At Indiana Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ----- The UAB track team got first place efforts from Elizabeth Ambrus, Tara Colvin and Erin Harris here Saturday to highlight the Blazers' performance at the Indiana Open.
Distance runner Ambrus, coming back from a foot injury suffered midway through the 2006 cross country champion, claimed a win in the 3,000-meter run as she clocked a time of 10:18.18. Colvin captured first in the 400-meter dash as she crossed the line at 56.92 while Harris was the winner in the triple jump at 11.88 meters.
UAB also took a first in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Amber Walker, Alina Varpiotaite, Genoah Collins and Colvin clocked a time of 3:48.66.
The Blazers demonstrated their versatility as they had first or second-place finishes in eight different events.
Varpiotaite was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.64 with Stacey Adewakun finished in the second spot in the 60-meter dash at 7.74. Adewakun also was fourth in the 200 at 25.43. Genoah Collins placed second in the mile run at 5:09.24.
Harris, the winner in the triple jump, was runner-up in the long jump at 5.73 meters. Deborah Hawkins finished second behind Harris in the triple jump with a leap of 11.43 meters. Harris also took a fourth place in the 60-meter hurdles (9.27), just behind teammate Erika Russ who was third at 9.26.
The Blazers again showed their depth in the distance events. Finishing behind Ambrus in the 3,000-meter run were Kristina Olsen who was third (10:22.86), Jennifer Thompson in fourth (10:30.78), Ryanne Fortney in sixth (10:42.86) and Thela Woodring in 10th place (11:51.83).
