HOUSTON, Texas - The UAB volleyball team saw its 10-match winning streak come to an end at Conference USA opponent Houston on Sunday, losing 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-27). The loss is the first C-USA defeat of the season for the Blazers who drop to 13-4 (2-1 C-USA), while Houston improves to 10-7 (1-1 C-USA). Sophomore setter Nevena Stefanov surpassed the 2,000 career assists milestone with her 36 assists against the Cougars to give her 2,013 for her career.
Sophomore outside hitter Ivana Bozic had 11 kills and 10 digs, while junior outside hitter Fernanda Domingos finished with 11 kills and three block assists. Junior libero Brianna Galvin led the team in digs with 12 and junior outside hitter Aleksandra Vujovic nearly had a double-double, finishing with nine kills and 10 digs.
Houston was led by Justine Farmer who had 11 kills and 10 digs, while Becca Sartori and Kelly McAnelly each finished with 10 kills.
UAB had won the first game in 15 of its 16 matches entering Sunday and got out in front of Houston early, when a Bozic kill gave the Blazers an 11-10 edge. The two teams exchanged points until 15-15, when after a kill by Domingos, the Cougars made their move, winning six out of seven points to take a 21-16 lead after an attack error on Bozic. Houston continued to pull away as three straight attack errors on the Blazers gave the Cougars a 30-21 victory in game one.
Houston maintained its momentum in game two, jumping out to a 10-3 lead after a ball handling error on Stefanov. UAB began to come back when an ace by Bozic cut the Houston lead to three, 13-10, before the Cougars pulled away once again as a Sartori kill made it 20-12 in favor of Houston. The Cougars eventually closed out the game, 30-24 on an attack error by Vujovic to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Looking to stage its third come-from-behind victory in the last six days, UAB jumped out in front early in game three, taking an 8-3 lead on a kill by junior middle blocker Angie Ping. Houston held tough, however as they evened the score at 12-12 on a Farmer kill. The teams played close the rest of the way with neither team leading by more than two until a kill by Crystal Schulle gave Houston the 30-27 victory to close out the match.
UAB will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 29 when it travels to take on Memphis for the second time this season after beating the Tigers, 3-2, this past week.
