BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Larry Giangrosso, UAB's head baseball coach the past seven years, has announced his retirement from coaching.
"After 31 years I am retiring from coaching," said Giangrosso. "I want to give a heartfelt thanks to all of our players, past and present, and their families for it has truly been a pleasure. I want to also give a special thanks to all of my colleagues in the coaching profession with whom we have developed great friendships.
"Finally, I want to thank the University administration and the athletic administration for their loyalty and support over the years," he said. "God bless you all."
A Birmingham native, Giangrosso came to UAB in 2000 after nine seasons as the head coach at Central Alabama Community College.
In 2003, the Blazers opened the season with 13 consecutive victories to establish a mark for the best UAB start in school history. The Blazers' win total of 31 in 2005 was the most for the program since the 1997 campaign. UAB also earned the program's third consecutive berth in the Conference USA Tournament in 2006. Giangrosso was inducted into the Alabama Baseball Coaches' Hall of Fame in 2001.
"Coach Giangrosso has worked hard each and every day to make this program better," said UAB Interim Director of Athletics Richard Margison. "He has been a true ambassador for UAB Athletics and this University and we are appreciative of his service and contributions. His fellow coaches and colleagues in the department will miss him."
