GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The UAB women's golf team struggled through Monday's second round at the 2006 Conference USA Championships, shooting a 327 team score to fall into a three-way tie for seventh place in the nine-team field. Freshman Christina Wentworth, who was tied for second place after one round at two-under par, is tied for ninth after 36-holes after shooting a four-over 76 Monday.
"Christina got better as the round went on after struggling a little early on," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "The greens were a lot slower today which threw us off. We putted better as a team on the back nine after adapting. We can still put together a run and make some noise. We'll see what Tuesday brings us."
East Carolina moved into the team lead in the event with a 294 team score which put the Pirates at 591 for 36 holes. They have a five stroke lead of SMU and Tulsa, which are tied for second. UCF and first-round leader UTEP are tied for fourth at 597. Memphis is in sixth at 614. UAB, Marshall and Southern Miss all have 637 scores for two rounds.
Wentworth stands just four shots off the lead -- just two more than her first round standing -- and is well within striking distance at three-over 147. She is just a stroke out of fourth place where a gaggle of five golfers are tied at 146. Gerina Mendoza of UTEP and Jennifer Ackerson of SMU stand at one-under par 143 for the tournament and share the individual lead.
Martha Hudson's rounds of 76-80 have the UAB junior tied for 25th overall. Janey Deimling (80-82=162, 37th), Krista Tressler (83-91=174, 42nd) and Ashlee Claydon (87-89=176, 43rd) contributed for the Blazers.
The third and final round of the 2006 C-USA Championships concludes Tuesday on the par-72, 6,216-yard Ironwood Country Club course.
