UAB Falls At Wyoming, 93-87

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Brad Jones scored 35 points, including the tying and go-ahead free throws, to lead Wyoming to a 93-87 victory over UAB on Saturday night. The two teams accounted for 17 ties and 17 lead changes throughout the back-and-forth affair.
It was the first game in a rare nonconference home-and-home series between the two schools. On Wednesday, Wyoming will play at UAB.
Trailing 85-83 after Paul Delaney's alley-oop dunk for the Blazers (2-2), Jones hit a pair of free throws with 2:08 left to tie the game at 85.
With 1:18 left, Jones hit the first of a pair of free throws, then missed the second. But he grabbed his own rebound in the corner and was fouled by Frank Holmes, giving him two more shots at the line. Jones hit both, giving the Cowboys (3-0) an 88-85 lead.
UAB pulled within 89-87 when Delaney scored on a drive down the lane with 19.1 seconds left, and the Blazers' press forced James Spencer to make a wild throw toward center court - which Jones snatched away from a waiting UAB player. Fouled again, Jones hit two more free throws to make it 91-87 with just 11.1 seconds left. Brandon Ewing's fast-break basket at the buzzer provided the final margin.
Ewing finished with 16 points for the Cowboys, Spencer scored 15 and Chris Anderson had 10.
Delaney led UAB with 26 points, and Lawrence Kinnard scored 20, both of which were career highs.
Delaney hit a baseline jumper with 14:49 left to give UAB a 61-59 lead, their first lead since midway through the first half. Although the Blazers would lead by as many as four points, they couldn't hold on.
Kinnard scored on a fast break to make it 83-80 with 3:46 left, but Jones' 3-pointer tied it up at 83 with 3:18 left. Delaney's alley-oop dunk gave UAB its last lead of the game.
Wyoming began to pull away in the first half, with Spencer and Joseph Taylor each scoring twice in a 13-2 Wyoming run. Jones hit a pair of free throws to make it 43-34 with 3:05 left in the half.
But UAB made a comeback, and Maurice Gibbs hit a pair of 3-pointers in the last 42 seconds to tie the score at 46 at halftime.
The game on Wednesday night (7p.m.) in Bartow Arena will mark the first home contest for UAB, and the first road contest for Wyoming this season.
