BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Lacey Wright, a four-time all-state cross country and track and field performer at Scottsboro (Ala.) High School, has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend UAB, according to an announcement Thursday by Blazers' head coach Ray Stanfield.
Wright, whose Scottsboro High team will be seeking its sixth consecutive Alabama Class 5A state championship this Saturday, is the first recruit of the fall signing period for the Blazers.
Wright finished second at the 2005 5A state cross country meet with a time of 18:26.23, just behind Scottsboro teammate Caitlin Chitwood who clocked a time of 18:24.80. She has earned all-state accolades on four occasions during her prep career.
"We're excited to have Lacey joining the UAB program," said Stanfield. "One of the great things about Lacey is that she brings an attitude of winning, having been a part of championship teams at Scottsboro under coach John Eslinger. When you think about the top distance runners in Alabama, everyone thinks of Lacey Wright."
Wright also has made her mark in track and field at Scottsboro. She placed fifth last spring in the 3,200-meter run at the state 5A meet. She was 10th in the 1,600-meters to help Scottsboro to a runner-up finish in the state competition.
