UAB to Host Southern Miss and UCF this Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The UAB Blazers will look to stay on the winning track this weekend when it hosts Southern Miss and UCF on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The team enters the weekend with some well earned confidence after beating Mississippi Valley State, 3-1, on Wednesday night in its final non-conference match of the season.
Friday's match will get underway at 7 p.m., while Sunday's match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
Now 15-9 (2-6 C-USA), UAB has posted the highest single-season win total since 1996.
Against MVSU Wednesday night, junior outside hitter Fernanda Domingos led the Blazers with 15 kills to go along with five block assists. Freshman setter Aley Tallman had a standout night as well, finishing just one kill shy of a triple double with nine put aways to go along with 25 assists and 11 digs.
Sophomore setter Ivana Bozic leads the team on the year with a 4.81 kills per game average, while sophomore setter Nevena Stefanov leads the team in assists at 12.28 per game. Stefanov needs just 50 assists this weekend to move up to sixth all-time at UAB in career assists in this just her second season. She currently has 2,325 career helpers.
Defensively, junior libero Brianna Galvin has been on her game as of late and is averaging 3.89 digs per game on the season. Sophomore middle blocker Casey Dent, who made her return to the court against Mississippi Valley State, leads the team in blocks with 53.
Southern Miss enters this week with a record of 12-10 (5-3 C-USA) after pulling off an upset win over Mashall 3-2 (29-31,30-23,23-30,30-28,15-8), last Sunday. The Golden Eagles are led by a well balanced offensive attack this season as five players are averaging better than two kills per game with Angela Hlavaty leading the way at 2.62 put aways per frame.
UAB trails the all-time series against Southern Miss, 13-15, after the Blazers beat the Golden Eagles twice last season, including a 3-0 sweep in Bartow Arena.
UCF enters the week with a record of 5-14 (1-7 C-USA) after losing seven straight. The Golden Knights are led by Maina Heming who is averaging 3.29 kills and 2.86 digs per game.
UAB is 1-5 all-time against UCF after losing a pair of matches to the Golden Knights in 2005.
