UAB Dominates Final Day of Niswonger Invitational

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- UAB junior Elizabeth Ambrus won the 5000-meter run and the 3000-meter run to highlight the final day of competition at the 2006 Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State. The Blazers also earned two more first place finishes in the distance medley and 60-meter dash.
"We had a very good day and a lot of girls had strong performances," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "We will take a week off before we go to Notre Dame but overall I was very pleased with the performances and our progression towards the conference meet."
Ambrus, who ran unattached, placed first in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:13.61. She also finished first in the 3000-meter run after running a 9:52.90. Ryanne Fortney also placed eighth in the 3000-meter as well.
In the distance medley, UAB finished with a time of 12:17.14. The distance medley consisted of Whitney Mays, Tara Colvin, Fortney, and Alina Varpiotaite.
Junior Oriana Carter placed first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55. Along with Carter, Stephanie McCauley finished sixth and Stacey Adewakun earned a ninth place finish in the event.
In the 3000-meter run, junior Jennifer Thompson led all Blazers finishing third with a time of 10:37.85. Sophomore Tracey Rowan competed in the 800-meter run and finished third as well after posting a time of 2:25.33.
UAB also had two fifth place finishes in the 4x400-meter relay and in the mile run. The Blazers finished with a time of 3:52.47 in the relay, while Mays ran a time of 5:15.48 in the mile.
UAB will take a week off before traveling to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Meyo Invitational from February 3-4.
