UAB Completes First Day of Niswonger Invitational

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- The UAB track and field team had seven top-10 finishes in the opening day of the 2006 Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State Friday at the Dave Walker Track.
In the preliminaries of the 4x400-meter relay, UAB placed fourth with a time of 3:52.23, while freshman Anna Fearon placed seventh in the pole vault with a height of 10-00.
Junior Oriana Carter advanced to the finals after running a 7.59 in the 60-meter dash. Her fifth place finish was the highest for UAB and she was the only athlete in the top-five that was not unattached. Sophomore Stacey Adewakun finished 15th with a time of 7.76, followed by Stephanie McCauley who placed 18th.
The Blazers had two top-10 finishers in the triple jump after junior Erin Harris placed sixth with a jump of 38-11.00 and junior Penny Shields finished ninth with a distance of 37-06.00.
In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Erika Russ led the way after placing 13th with a time of 9.12. Harris, Deborah Hawkins and freshman Katryce Sykes also competed in the event.
UAB earned a seventh place and eighth place finish in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Tara Colvin placed seventh to lead the Blazers with a time of 56.89, while freshman Alina Varpiotaite ran a 56.98.
