BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team scored three second half goals on their way to beating cross-town rival Birmingham-Southern, 4-1, Friday night at West Campus Field. Sophomore Jill Porto led the Blazers with three goals including the game-winning goal in the 50th minute.
"I thought we played very well tonight," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Birmingham-Southern is a very well coached team. Their coaching staff does a great job of mixing things up and you just never know how to play them. Tonight, we were able to make some adjustments and continue to maintain a high level of intensity throughout the game. We set a game plan and we were able to accomplish what we set out to do."
In the match, Porto gave the Blazers an early 1-0 lead in the 6th minute on an assist from sophomore Daelyn Richards.
In the 50th minute, UAB misplayed a ball that ended up at the feet of Caitlin Gordon resulting in the only goal of the match for the Panthers.
UAB controlled the remaining 40 minutes, scoring three more goals to win the match. Porto scored the game-winning goal and her second of the night in the 54th minute. Junior Jennifer Williams was credited with the assist on the play.
In the 73rd minute, freshman Nasra Abdullah scored her second goal of the year off a BSC header. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the match, Porto stole the ball away from a Panther defender and scored her third and final goal of the game.
In the match, UAB out shot the Panthers 26 to 11, while the Blazers took nine shots on goal.
UAB will be back in action Friday night when they host UTEP in its first Conference USA match of the season.
