BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team was scheduled to open the 2005 season at the South Alabama Tournament this weekend in Mobile, but those matches have been cancelled due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Instead, the Blazers have scheduled three matches at home against Stetson and Lipscomb on Friday and Saturday.
UAB will take on Stetson on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. in Bartow Arena. The Blazers will then return to the court at 7:00 p.m. to face Lipscomb. The final match of the weekend will again pit UAB against Stetson at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Stetson and UAB were two of the five teams originally scheduled to take part in the South Alabama Tournament. The Hatters began play last weekend at the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla., where they fell to Florida International and Florida Atlantic before defeating Bethune-Cookman. DeeAnn Dempsey was named to the all-tournament team for Stetson, leading her team with 48 kills and 46 digs in the three matches.
Lipscomb has begun the season 0-2, and was scheduled to take part in the New Orleans Tournament this weekend along with Northwestern State, Samford and the University of New Orleans.
The Blazers are 4-1 all-time against Stetson and have never faced Lipscomb on the volleyball court.
