BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Agne Eggerth, a former Olympic sprinter from the Lithuanian national team, has been hired as an assistant coach at UAB, according to an announcement made by head track and field coach Ray Stanfield. Eggerth joins the staff full-time after spending two years with the Blazers as a volunteer coach.
Eggerth primarily worked with the Blazer sprinters as a volunteer coach, and will now devote her time the sprinters and relay teams.
"I'm excited to join the UAB coaching staff this year," said Eggerth. "Since I worked as a volunteer coach for two years, I'm expecting a smooth transition. I know the program and the athletes, and they know me, so there won't be much of a change for them."
Eggerth is a two-time member of the Lithuanian Olympic team. She has competed as a sprinter in the European Championships in addition to four World Championships, earning places on the Olympic teams that participated in Sydney and Athens.
"Adding Agne gives a new look to our coaching staff," said Stanfield. "The girls really look up to her because of her accomplishments as an athlete. She trained with them when she was preparing for the 2004 Olympics in Greece, and the girls have a lot of admiration and respect for her. Now that she's no longer competing, she's really able to focus on coaching and to sharing her expertise on sprinting. It's a tremendous advantage for our program to have a coach with the credentials she has."
Eggerth is a 27-time Lithuanian National Champion and currently holds her country's records in the 50, 55, 60, 100 and 200-meters.
Eggerth is a graduate of McKendree College (Illinois), with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education. While at McKendree state she was an NAIA national champion 13 times and the NAIA Athlete of the Year twice. She is still the NAIA national record holder in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.
Eggerth, originally from Kaunas, Lithuania, currently resides in Birmingham with her husband, Andy Eggerth.
