BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball team heads to Tuscaloosa on Wednesday for a 6:30 pm showdown with the 12th-ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama which will be televised by CSS. Matt Coulter will handle play-by-play duties with Kevin Henslee as the color analyst. The last time the Blazers and Crimson Tide got together on the diamond, UAB came out on top with a 7-1 victory in Birmingham on Feb. 24.
The Blazers are coming off a series victory over Conference USA opponent Charlotte last weekend at Young Memorial Field. After falling 9-7 in Friday's opener, UAB rebounded with back-to-back victories on Saturday and Sunday. Jeff Brown threw UAB's first complete game of the season in a 7-2 win on Saturday. Cole Helms also hit a grand slam for the Blazers in that game. Ryan Huffman came in out of the bullpen and shut down the 49ers over the final 4.1 innings on Sunday, collecting his sixth victory of the season. Zac Ward's three-run double in the fifth inning was all the offense UAB would need in the 5-2 win.
Alabama took two of three games from SEC rival Georgia las weekend in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide scored four times in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-3 come from behind victory in Friday's game one. After the Bulldogs squeaked out a one-run win on Saturday, Alabama's David Robertson struck out nine in seven innings and the Crimson Tide exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 11-9 win and clinch the series.
The Blazers are 14-29 all-time against Alabama after breaking a six-game losing streak against the Tide back in February.
