UAB Heads Back To Houston For C-USA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB track and field team travels back to Houston on Thursday for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, hosted by the University of Houston, May 12-14.
The Blazers are hoping to repeat the success they had in Houston at the C-USA Indoor Championships earlier this year, when they took third place out of 13 teams. UAB had six all-conference performances and head coach Ray Stanfield was named C-USA Women's Indoor Coach of the Year. The Blazers scored 77 points in the meet following first-place Houston's 117 points and second-place Charlotte's 83.50 points.
UAB will be competing against Depaul, Charlotte, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Houston, Marquette, Louisville, Houston, Memphis, USF, Tulane, TCU and Southern Miss.
Competition begins on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., when senior Judy Shepherd and sophomore Erin Harris scheduled to compete in the heptathlon. Sophomores Mary Kim Webb and Tiffany Parker will compete in the javelin throw at 5:30 p.m. and sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus will run in the 10,000-meter event at 6:30 p.m.
On Friday the heptathlon resumes at 9:30 a.m. and field events resume at 3:00 p.m. when Harris will compete in the long jump. The Blazers' first running event of the day begins at 4:30 when Harris, Shepherd, senior Adrienne Duke and freshman Erika Russ will compete in the 100-meter hurdles. UAB's final event of the day starts at 7:00 p.m., when freshman Whitney Mays and sophomore Ryanne Fortney compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Mays holds the school record in the steeplechase with a time of 11:04.91.
Saturday's events begin at 12:00 p.m., when Harris will compete in the triple jump. Harris set an NCAA Regional Championship qualifying mark of 12.33m earlier this season at the Alabama relays. Running events begin at 1:00 p.m. when the Blazers' 4x100-meter relay team will attemt to better its own NCAA Regional Championship qualifying time of 45.51. The final event of the day is the 4x400-meter relay at 3:25 p.m. UAB's 4x400-meter relay team holds the school record of 3:42.28. The awards ceremony will take place immediately following the 4x400-meter relay. Live results will be posted at www.conferenceusa.com.
