JACKSONVILLE, Ala.-- The UAB baseball team picked up its 30th victory of the season with a 8-3 win over Jacksonville State at Rudy Abbott Field on Tuesday evening. Five different players recorded at least two hits for the Blazers who improve to 30-19 overall, reaching the 30-win mark for the second straight year. Jacksonville State is now 25-22 with the loss.
Randy Mills improves to 3-2 with the victory for UAB while Tony Drinkard of Jacksonville State falls to 0-3. Adam Price also worked four shutout innings of relief for the Blazers to pick up his first career save.
Cole Helms led the way offensively for UAB, notching a career-best four hits to go along with an RBI and three runs scored. Seth Rollin also went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI.
After a J.R. Bond sacrifice fly in the top of the second gave UAB a 1-0 lead, Ryan Metcalf came through with a two-out single up the middle which scored Rollin from second base. Rollin had reached earlier in the inning on a single through the left side of the infield.
Leading 2-1 in the top of the third, the Blazers added a pair of runs. After the first two batters were retired in order, Nathan McCorkle drew a walk, stole second, then came around to score on a single by Helms. Rollin followed with his second hit in as many innings, an RBI double over the head of Gamecock centerfielder Jason Horn.
Jacksonville State inched closer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The first came when Brian Piazza reached on a bases-loaded infield single to shortstop which scored Jason Horn. The Gamecocks plated another run when Clint Carroll scored on a Mills wild pitch two batters later.
Rollin helped put the game out of reach with a two-run double in the top of the ninth which scored Zac Ward and Helms. Ward had reached on a walk while Helms singled sharply to right, setting a new career-high in hits. Bond also added an RBI single in the inning for UAB.
The Blazers and Gamecocks will get together again on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham.
