PANTHERSVILLE, Ga.-- UAB freshman Heath Tapscott pitched a career-high 7.2 shutout innings as the Blazers defeated Georgia State, 3-0 on Wednesday evening at The Field in Panthersville. The Blazers are now 19-10 overall while the Panthers fall to 17-14.
Tapscott allowed just three hits and four walks while striking out one and improved his record to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Senior Ryan Huffman came in to record the final four outs for UAB and picked up his second save.
The Blazers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with two outs. With J.R. Bond on third base, Rush Knight ripped an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Bond and giving UAB a 1-0 advantage. The Blazers would add one more run in the inning when Knight crossed home plate as Ryan Metcalf got picked off first base but stayed in a rundown long enough to extend UAB's lead.
UAB added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning when Seth Rollin led off with a solo home run, his fourth of the season.
The Blazers return to action on Friday for game one of a three-game Conference USA series against the Memphis Tigers at Young Memorial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
