BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- UAB snapped a four-game conference losing streak with a 6-3 victory over Memphis on Friday evening at Young Memorial Field. Adam Price pitched six shutout innings in relief to pick up his third victory of the season and Rush Knight led the Blazer offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance which included his third home run. UAB is now 20-10 overall, 5-5 in C-USA while the Tigers fall to 8-18, 2-8 in league play.
Price (3-3) went six innings and allowed just 2 hits and one walk while striking out six Memphis batters. Seth Rollin also added three hits for UAB while Nathan McCorkle contributed two singles and a run batted in. Tigers' starting pitcher Daniel de Armas suffered his first loss of the season, allowing six earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched.
Memphis wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first. UAB starter Cole Helms issued back-to-back walks to Jordan Tolliver and Chris Newsom leading off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Chad House, Ryan Martin grounded a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Tolliver and Newsom to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third, UAB got on the board when a two-out single by Levi Patmon scored Knight who had singled to lead off the inning.
The Blazers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth after three consecutive singles by McCorkle, Helms and Rollin. After a fielder's choice by Dan Stucky scored McCorkle, Knight turned the game around and gave UAB a 5-3 lead with a three-run home run over the right-center field wall, his third homer of the season.
UAB added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Zac Ward reached on a two-out double down the left field line and scored when McCorkle lined the next pitch into center field, extending the Blazer lead to 6-3.
First pitch for game two between the Blazers and Tigers is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Young Memorial Field.
