NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Third-ranked Tulane wrapped up a three-game sweep of UAB with a 13-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Turchin Stadium. Green Wave starting pitcher Brian Bogusevic improved to 5-1 with a six-inning, eight strikeout performance. Tulane is now 25-5 overall, 7-2 in Conference USA while UAB falls to 18-10, 4-5 in C-USA.
Micah Owings led the way for Tulane, going 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI. Brad Emaus also added three hits and an RBI for the Green Wave.
Cole Helms continued his hot hitting, getting UAB's first hit with an infield single in the top of the second inning. Then with two outs, designated hitter J.R. Bond doubled down the left field line, allowing Helms to score all the way from first and giving the Blazers an early 1-0 lead. With Bond on second and two outs, Ben McCullars chased strike three in the dirt, but the pitch got away from Tulane catcher Scott Madden. Bond was running from second on the pitch and was able to come home with the second run of the inning as the wild pitch scooted all the way to the backstop.
The Green Wave came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Matt Barket led the inning off with his third home run of the season, then Owings doubled to right-center field and scored on a line drive single up the middle by Will Rice.
A three-run Tulane third inning, capped off by back-to-back RBI doubles by Mark Hamilton and Owings, extended the Green Wave's lead to 5-2.
Tulane put eight more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Tommy Manzella and Madden each contributed two-run singles in the inning and Owings added his team-leading eighth home run of the season over the scoreboard in left field.
Trailing 13-2, the Blazers drew three straight bases-loaded walks in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 13-5 and prevent the game from ending after six and a half innings due to the ten-run rule.
The Blazers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Georgia State for a 6:00 pm game.
