BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- Cincinnati held UAB to just four hits and handed the Blazers their first home conference loss of the season with a 1-0 victory in Sunday's series finale at Young Memorial Field. UAB is now 25-15, 10-8 in C-USA play while the Bearcats improve to 17-19, 6-11 in C-USA.
Cincinnati starting pitcher Sean Munninghoff allowed just two hits in 5.1 innings of work to pick up his third victory of the season. Josh Kay worked a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick up his team-leading fifth save.
Brandon Flaherty was the hard-luck loser for UAB, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out four over five innings in his first career start.
The Bearcats broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth when Brian Szarmach lined a one-out, solo home run over the right-center field wall. The homer was Szarmach's team-leading eighth of the season.
Nathan McCorkle doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and moved down to third on a sacrifice bunt by J.R. Bond. After Cole Helms was hit by a pitch, Kay struck out Seth Rollin on three pitches then walked Zac Ward on a 3-2 pitch. But Kay rallied to strike out Rush Knight, ending the Blazer scoring threat and the game.
The Blazers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Troy for a 6 p.m. game against the Trojans.
