GERMANTOWN, Tenn. - Brooke Mangan and Janey Deimling were named All-Conference USA and UAB finished the 2005 C-USA Women's Golf Championships in eighth place as the league's women's golf season came to an end. Mangan was named first team all-conference and becomes the first UAB women's golfer to be named all-conference four straight years. Deimling was tabbed to the league's third team all-conference squad.
"What a thrill for both Brooke and Janey," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "Brooke has been all-conference now for four straight years and is truly deserving of the recognition. To finish as a first team pick as a senior is especially satisfying for her and for us. Janey was absolutely shocked to be picked, so it was very exciting for us all to see her get the recognition."
The Blazers shot a 320 team score in Tuesday's third round of the league's tournament at the par-72, 6,178-yard Germantown Country Club Course to finish eighth out of 10 teams. The third round score was an 11-stroke improvement from round two.
"We were overall a little disappointed by our play," head coach Kim Wilcox said. "The course was an older course with elevated greens that played very, very hard. We're used to newer courses with a more open design and softer greens. It rattled us the first day and we just didn't do a good job of adjusting. It's a learning experience, though, and we'll be better in the future."
No. 13 Tulane came from behind to win the 2005 C-USA Women's Golf title with two players recording sub-par rounds on Wednesday. Liliana Alvarez notched the low round with a 69 on Wednesday to pull into a tie for third on the individual leaderboard. Alison Walshe held on to her lead to take individual medalist honors for the Green Wave. TCU's Stacey Bieber finished second.
UAB seniors Liz Schweihs and Mangan shot identical rounds of 77 to pace the Blazers in the third round. Schweihs finished in 21st place in the individual standings with a 19-over 235 for the three rounds. Mangan's 239 tied her with two others for 25th overall. Deimling and Martha Hudson shot 87 and 82, respectively, on Wednesday and tied for 38th with identical total scores of 251 (35-over). Sophomore Lois Jones, playing in her first Conference USA Championships, shot 252 - a personal best for 54-holes - and finished tied for 41st overall.
Tulane was followed by TCU and USF on the team leaderboard. East Carolina and Louisville rounded out the top five. UAB finished 11 shots behind Memphis and 17 shots in back of Southern Miss. The Blazers bettered ninth-place Cincinnati and 10th-place St. Louis.
The pair of All-Conference USA honors for the Blazers marks just the third time UAB has had two women's golf all-league players in the same season. Susan Seabrook was joined on the C-USA second team by Cindy Carson in 1997 and Heather Lourie in 1998.
Mangan was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2001-02 and to the league's third team in 2002-03 and 2003-04. She joins Lourie (2000-01) as the only Blazers ever to be named First Team All-Conference USA.
