NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Third-ranked Tulane got another outstanding pitching performance, this time from Brandon Gomes, as the Green Wave defeated UAB by a score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Turchin Stadium.
Gomes struck out seven and held the Blazers to just four hits and one run in seven innings of work, improving to 4-1 on the season. Tulane is now 24-5 overall, 6-2 in Conference USA while UAB falls to 18-9, 4-4 in league play.
UAB starting pitcher Jeff Brown suffered the loss, falling to 4-2 after allowing four runs on seven hits in seven innings.
Tulane took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Nathan Southard drew a leadoff walk and moved to third when Brad Emaus followed with a double. The Green Wave got their first run when Tommy Manzella recorded an RBI groundout to second base. A triple by Scott Madden then scored Emaus with the second run of the inning.
The Blazers put a run on the board in the top of the fifth. Cole Helms notched UAB's first hit of the day, a single to right field leading off the inning. He would move to second on a wild pitch, then with two outs and two strikes, Ben McCullars lined a single into right, scoring Helms and bringing the Blazers within a run of Tulane's lead.
The Green Wave loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth. Singles by Manzella and Madden followed by a walk to Matt Barket brought Mark Hamilton to the plate. Hamilton came through with a line drive single through the left side, scoring Manzella. Tulane added one more run to take a 4-1 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Brian Bogusevic.
Seth Rollin doubled to the right-center field gap with one out in the top of the ninth inning to score Zac Ward and Nathan McCorkle and bring UAB within a run at 4-3.
The third and final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Turchin Stadium.
