SOUTH BEND, Ind. ----- UAB sophomore Genoah Collins improved her NCAA provisional qualifying time on Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame. Collins ran a 2:07.70, finishing second and beating her own school record of 2:08.75.
"Genoah's time put her 15th on the list, but we're just going to have to wait and see what happens with everyone," said Blazers head coach Ray Stanfield. "They usually take the top 16 or 18 runners, so it really just depends on what else has happened this weekend. She put herself in the upper echelon of the 800-meter runners in the country. She ran a great race, did everything I wanted her to; she took the lead and finished strong. She's had a great year. This season she's lowered the school record by seven seconds and her own personal record by ten seconds."
Senior Theresa Smith also ran well, as she had a time of 8:48 in the 60-meter hurdles, tying her personal record in the event. Smith qualified for the 60-meter hurdle finals and finished sixth overall. The time is the second-best in UAB history, just .02 seconds off the school record.
"Theresa tied her own personal record, and was able to finish her indoor career with a strong performance," Stanfield said. "She was able to make the finals, and she just really did well today."
Additionally, sophomores Oriana Carter and Stephanie McCauley both competed in the 60-meter dash. Carter ran a 7.64 and McCauley ran a 7.77.
The NCAA Championships will be hosted by the Universtity of Arkansas on March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark. The Blazers will take some time off before starting the outdoor season in Tuscaloosa, Ala. at the Alabama Relays, hosted by the University of Alabama on March 17-20.
"We're going to take a few weeks off before we start the outdoor season," said Stanfield. "We'll open up with the Alabama Relays, which is always a good meet and hopefully we'll be able to do well there."
