TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- UAB sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus continued her breakout season as she cruised to a victory in the 10,000-meter event on Friday at the Alabama Relays hosted by the University of Alabama.
Ambrus took first place in her first ever 10,000-meter race with a time of 36.44.05. Sophomore Jennifer Thompson took third in the event as she set a personal record of 37.59.99.
"This was Elizabeth's first 10K, and I really wanted to get her in one before we go to some other meets so that we can try to qualify her for the NCAA regionals," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "She ran really well today; obviously she was at the front running by herself, but she was relaxed and steady. Jennifer Thompson ran what was probably her best 10K ever, and she set a new personal record today. They both just did very well and I'm extremely proud of them."
Blazers' senior Judy Shepherd took second in the heptathlon with 4,615 points and sophomore Erin Harris took third with 4,271 points in the event. On Friday Shepherd took third in both the 800-meter dash and the javelin throw and finished sixth in the long jump. Harris was second in the long jump, fifth in the javelin throw and seventh in the 800 meters. Freshman Tracy Rowan , who finished ninth overall in the heptathlon took second in the 800-meter dash.
"The girls finished well in this competition," said UAB assistant coach Jennifer Robeson. "It gave them a good idea of what they need to work on for their next heptathlon."
The Alabama Relays continue Saturday at 8 a.m. with the final event scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m. with the final event at 5:10 p.m.
