IRVING, Texas - UAB's Janey Deimling has been named Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week for the first award week of the spring season, the league office announced Wednesday. It is the first such honor for a Blazer golfer this year.
"It's fantastic for Janey and for UAB," UAB head coach Kim Wilcox said. "She is such a hard worker, she deserves every bit of it. Janey has been model of consistency on the course for us this spring and to see someone rewarded for her efforts is very satisfying."
Deimling, a 5-5 junior from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, turned in back-to-back top 10 finishes this week, tying for ninth place during the Buffalo Rock Southern Shootout, hosted by Birmingham Southern, and finishing alone in ninth at USF's Waterlefe Invitational. She fired a personal best 74 in the first round of the Buffalo Rock Southern Shootout. Deimling then trimmed two more strokes to set a new career-low with an even par 72 during the Waterlefe to establish a career-best three-round score of 224.
Her performance helped the Blazers to a third place finish at the BSC Shootout and seventh at the USF Invitational. Deimling had also won her first tournament title during February at the Miss Louis Season Opener. Teammate Brooke Mangan earned medalist honors for the Southern Shootout and in the Blazers' fall finale at the John Kirk/Lady Panther Invitational on Oct. 25. The pair are now in the school record books as it marks the first time UAB golfers have earned three consecutive individual victories.
Deimling and the Blazers return to action Monday and Tuesday at the Samford Intercollegiate at Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Ala.
