BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Looking to extend its season-best five-game winning streak, the UAB baseball team will play two non-conference games this week before opening C-USA play this weekend. The Blazers host Butler on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Young Memorial Field before heading to Jacksonville State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
UAB (11-5) holds a 2-0 all-time advantage against the Bulldogs, but is just 12-14 against Jacksonville State. The Blazers and Gamecocks split a home-and-home series last year.
UAB won all four of its games last week, escaping with a 5-3 victory over Troy on Tuesday before sweeping Tennessee Tech in three games last weekend at Young Memorial Field. Nathan McCorkle batted .692 during the weekend with three home runs and 10 RBIs and was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week on Monday.
McCorkle leads the Blazers with five home runs and 18 RBIs while freshman centerfielder Clint Toomey's .429 batting average is tops on the team and ties him for second in Conference USA. Toomey has been the catalyst for UAB's offense since taking over in center field. He has made 14 consecutive starts, leading the team in hits (21), runs (18), walks (15) and stolen bases (4). Toomey's .569 on-base percentage also ranks him first in the conference.
